“It’s one thing to make a picture of what a person looks like, it’s another to make a portrait of who they are.”

No matter if I was on commercial job for a national brand, in some remote village in Africa shooting for the Lonely Planet, capturing memories for couples on the biggest day of their lives, or working in my studio with a fitness competitor, I have always considered myself a portrait photographer. I believe an image is infinitely better when you capture a real moment, a natural expression and an authentic feel.

What's the difference between a headshot and a portrait shoot?

A headshot is usually on a clean white or black backdrop and typically is from the chest up. Perfect for LinkedIn profile picture or a business card. A portrait has less restrictions. It's about capturing the real you. Environment, lighting, wardrobe and expression are all unique to you..

How long do shoots typically take?

Time varies from shoot to shoot. Its important to me that clients don't feel rushed but obviously we need to block time so everyone can prepare accordingly. Headshots we block 30-45 mins. Portraits are 1-1 1/2 hrs and Portfolio shoots are 2 hrs Please keep in mind that if you are late it cuts into your time.

What should I wear?

Wardrobe is personal. I'm a big believer in keeping it simple. For Headshots I suggest basic colors (matching your eyes often works) and stay away from busy patterns. Keep in mind the images about you and your choice of clothing should compliment not overpower. This are a little different for a portrait; When talking a portrait I suggest the client be comfortable first and foremost and I'm a believer in wearing something that the people who know you are used to seeing you in. If you never where a dress or wear a blazer chances are you aren't going to feel or look like yourself. For more suggestions feel free to email me.
